Sean King and Michelle Maxwell are two of my favorite fictional private detectives. I like the fact they are former Secret Service agents; the fact that - of the two - Maxwell is the one more likely to throw a punch or burgle a house; that King is a lawyer who'd rather be a private eye than spend his time arguing legal issues in a courtroom; and that - despite serious bumps in their careers - they each rose above their failures and got on with their lives.
In this story, readers are treated to an intriguing case with a villain that they can almost sympathize with: A man who lost his family because of the down-and-dirty political machinations of the Reagan White House during the Iran-Contra scandal.
The plot revolves around a fortune - 1 billion Euros to be exact - that was hijacked in Afghanistan when a secret wartime mission went pear shaped.
Who stole the money is almost not as important as why it was stolen, however. King and Maxwell enter the case almost by accident when, as they are driving back to Washington one night, they see a young boy running through the rain carrying a pistol.
When they hear his story they decide to help and, as the Bard once said, therein hangs a tale. Author David Baldacci's narrative races along just above the speed limit: Not so fast that you miss important points but faster than the average whodunit.
The plot is sufficiently complex that it can keep readers guessing and the secondary characters are well fleshed out. Baldacci's writing is a little - sometimes a lot - stilted and his use of words is not always on point, however.
For example, at one point a character "opines" that the military's cyber-security experts would know if the Pentagon's computers have been hacked.
That's not an opinion, however, because he's stating it as fact and, thus, "opined" is not used correctly in this instance.
Call me old fashioned - and I am - but "said" would have been a much better word choice. That said, this is a very good read with some well-defined characters, and a plot that has enough twists to make it interesting.
Recommended for King and Maxwell fans and those who don't mind a little politics injected into their mystery novels.
At some point physics take over. There are only so many hours in a day. There are only so many angles to cover. I felt that this book was shallow and lacking in character.
The action was ok but the storytelling was subpar. The characters in the plot felt made up and unrelatable. How many times does King need to feel worried about Maxwell's physical and mental state?
How many times does King have to complain about Maxwell's dirty car? We get it, it's messy. Nope, will leave Baldacci and look for something else.
I stumbled across the King and Maxwell series by chance a few years back and became a fan. I was really looking forward to reading the latest. Sorry to say that this one just didn't grab me, and it took me nearly two weeks to read it since it just didn't hold my interest for very long.
The storyline just was not interesting enough to warrant the long drawn out suspense regarding the bad guy's end game. We knew his parents had killed themselves in a suicide pact two decades ago over something regarding his father and that he wanted to avenge their deaths.
He wasn't very well fleshed out. Wasn't even in the book that much to be honest. Just a scene here and there. When I finally found out how the bad guy planned to get his revenge, I was like, "Seriously?
Are you kidding? You had some guy on a mission in the Middle East that he wasn't really expected to survive. The mission goes wrong, but he survives and because of the nature of the mission, he becomes a wanted man.
The military has already told the guy's son back in America that he's dead knowing that he really isn't. By chance King and Maxwell see the kid running down the street on the night he had been told by the Army that his father is dead.
He has a gun, so they chase him down and take him home. Afterwards, King simply wants to move on, but his partner Maxwell feels this compulsion to be there for him and annoyingly pushes the issue practically forcing them into the case.
King reluctantly caves and they end up getting involved and start digging. Needless to say, many people don't want the truth regarding the mission to come out.
In this book, King and Maxwell were not very engaging, the teen client they were helping along with his father were dull, and the action and suspense were ho-hum.
This book goes on for over pages, but the story is kind of thin and probably could have been stripped down to a hundred or so pages less. This is easily the weakest "King and Maxwell" book and perhaps one of Baldacci's weakest efforts.
